On April 11, Marleigh was killed by a driver in Webster, MA. The driver had been arrested for negligent operation and drug possession days earlier.

Our current system is reactive—it waits for a tragedy to happen before taking the keys away. We are days away from releasing our 2025 Crash Report, and the message is clear: Massachusetts needs a “One-Strike” policy for high-risk behavior.

We can’t afford to wait for a pattern of behavior when a single incident can cost a life.

At WalkMassachusetts, we don’t just tolerate walke At WalkMassachusetts, we don’t just tolerate walkers. We celebrate them. 🚶‍♀️

Marathon Weekend is here, Boston! While a recent ad has suggested that walking is something to be “tolerated,” we know the truth: in Boston—especially this week—walking is how we show up.

It’s how the loudest fans reach Heartbreak Hill, how volunteers get to their posts at 5:00 AM, and how neighbors navigate the incredible energy of our streets. 📢

True inclusivity means respecting every pace—whether you’re an elite competitor, a para-athlete, or a family cheering from the curb. Respect belongs to everyone moving on our streets everyday. ♿️ 🏃‍♀️ 🧡

Etel spoke powerfully about the human cost of road design—reminding us that behind every crash report is a family, a neighbor, and a community changed forever.

At WalkMass, we believe that no one should be at risk simply for crossing the street after work or walking to school.

Join us in Kendall Square this Wednesday as we honor this year’s Golden Shoe winners and recommit to our mission of making Massachusetts a leader in pedestrian safety.

Part 2️⃣ of Somerville PTAC golden shoe award! ⭐️ Part 2️⃣ of Somerville PTAC golden shoe award! ⭐️

We are thrilled to announce that the Somerville Pedestrian & Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC) has been honored with a 2026 Golden Shoe Award by WalkMassachusetts!

This award recognizes a major milestone: PTAC’s first-ever community-led Walk Audit. While PTAC has long collaborated with the City on areas already slated for redesign, we took the initiative to lead this audit in Union Square to generate momentum for an area that isn’t yet scheduled for short-term improvements.

🌆 Why Union Square?
As one of the two busiest pedestrian areas in Somerville, Union Square is a beloved hub—but with five high-crash roads intersecting there, it poses a high risk to people walking. PTAC chose this location to ensure this environmental justice community gets the safety and accessibility it deserves.

🤝 A Powerful Collaboration
PTAC was proud to spearhead a coalition of community organizations to make this vision a reality:
Somerville Alliance for Safe Streets (SASS)

Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD)

Union Square Main Streets (USMS)

Groundwork Somerville, whose Green Team youth measured heat index, air quality, and noise levels.

💥 The Impact
With the help of 60 community members, PTAC audited three high-traffic routes, recording vital data on:
Sidewalk quality & crosswalk safety

Signal timing

Pedestrian amenities

This data is now directly informing the next stages of the Union Square Plaza and Streetscapes project.

Join us on April 15th as we celebrate this win at the WalkMassachusetts annual celebration!
