Statewide Fatal Crashes In MA, January 2024

Each month, we post about the fatal crashes in Massachusetts from a previous month, and share any trends that we see. For the full list of monthly posts, head here. We will be releasing a year in review for 2023 in the coming weeks to highlight common issues. You can read the year in review for 2022 here.

In our previous post, we took a look at crashes listed in the MassDOT Crash Portal in December; eight were identified as people walking. In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in January 2024. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Crash Information.” Any Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 28 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in January in the MassDOT Crash portal, 9 were identified as people walking.
  • Similar to last month, some of the pedestrian crashes had the ‘speed limit’ field blank in the Road Inventory Viewer. We are now also using the MassGIS-MassDOT Roads layer to check for speed limit information.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in January was 46.1.

CBS 6 News (WRGB Albany) reported that two people were seriously injured after they were hit by a car while crossing the street early on New Year’s Day.

A 2014 Toyota Corolla driven by Nicholas Ainsley, 23, of Pittsfield, MA, was traveling eastbound on West Housatonic Street, when he hit two people that were crossing in the 50 block area, according to police. The pedestrians were identified as Shanon M. Steffey, 34, of Pittsfield, and Matthew Squires, 32, of Pittsfield. They were both taken to Berkshire Medical Center with serious injuries. Steffey was later transferred to Bay State Medical Center, as her condition was critical, according to police.

Steffey later succumbed to their injuries.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, W Housatonic St is under local jurisdiction. It is a two-way road with one travel lane in each direction and a right turn lane. There is a crosswalk at this location. There are sidewalks on both sides of the street. The speed limit is 25mph.

The Quincy Sun reports 85-year old John Collins was struck and killed by a 63-year old Quincy man in front of a senior living apartment complex at 1000 Southern Artery in Quincy near the intersection of South Street and Southern Artery.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Southern Artery is under local jurisdiction. It is a two-way road with one travel lane in each direction and turn lanes at the intersection. There are sidewalks on both sides of the street. The speed limit is 35mph.

WWLP reports that 33-year old Melvin L. Wilson was struck and killed while walking south along Rt 116. The 29-year old driver who hit him called 911 and stayed on the scene.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, SR-1116 South is under MassDOT jurisdiction. It is a two-way median divided roadway with two travel lanes in each direction. There are no sidewalks. The speed limit is 55mph.

42-year old Patrick Royster was struck and killed after being hit by an SUV with a plow attached.

MassLive reports that 73-year old Gregory Stahl is being charged with leaving the scene of a collision causing death and for driving with an expired license.

From NBC 10 Boston:

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, but snow, slush and rain caused slick conditions in Wrentham and elsewhere across Massachusetts.

“It’s a dark section of road, as you can see, and obviously, the weather is not good, so visibility was not great,” [Police Chief Bill] McGrath said.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Washington Street and Commercial Street are each under local jurisdiction. Washington Street a two-way road with two travel lanes and shoulders in each direction. There are no sidewalks on either side of the street. The speed limit is 55mph.

WWLP reports a 59-year old Danvers woman was struck and killed around noon by an SUV operated by a 60-year old woman in Revere about a block away from Revere Beach Boulevard.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Oak Island Street is under MassDCR jurisdiction. It is a two-way road with one travel lane in each direction. There are sidewalks on each side of the street. The speed limit is unclear, as it is blank in the database and no speed limit signs are viewable on the street on Google Streetview.

Boston 25 News reports that a woman using a wheelchair was struck and killed by the driver of a plow truck outside Boston Medical Center.

From Boston 25 News:

“It’s sad, it’s sad you know. She’s somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister,” a woman who knew the victim told Boston 25 News. “I can’t even imagine how the driver must feel. They said he was so distraught.”

The driver of the truck involved in the crash also remained on the scene.

In a statement shared with Boston 25 News, W.L. French Jr. Trucking, the operating company of the truck, said:

“Early this morning, one of our plows was involved in an accident that resulted in a loss of life. W. L. French, Jr. Trucking and its entire team are committed to the safety of the public, our people, and our work. We are heartbroken by this tragic accident. We extend our sympathies to the family of the individual and all of those affected by this loss. W. L. French, Jr. Trucking is cooperating with authorities during this investigation.”

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Massachusetts Avenue is under local jurisdiction. It is a two-way road with two straight travel lanes and one turn lane in each direction. (The Road Inventory only lists 2 lanes in each direction.) There are sidewalks on each side of the street. The speed limit is 30mph.

The Berkshire Eagle reports 41-year old Niall Nordoff was struck and killed after being struck by the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado.

The Berkshire Eagle went on to give more context, including a Facebook post from Niall just months earlier: 

Friends of Nordoff, a landscaper and landscape designer, said he was walking from his home off South Main Street (Route 7) — not far from where he was hit — on his way to a job interview. Police have not yet confirmed this, however.

Others pointed to a Facebook post made by Nordoff in November in which he said drivers on that straightaway were “doing 80 and barely missing me.”

“The amount of traffic on 7 from where I live to big y is out of control,” he also wrote.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Main Street / Rt 7 is under local jurisdiction. It is a two-way road with one travel lane in each direction. Photos from the news article does not show any sidewalks on this section of the roadway. The Road Inventory says there is a 4 foot sidewalk on one side of the roadway; Google Streetview shows there are unconnected segments of sidewalk on one side of the street. The speed limit is 35mph.

38-year old Ernest Partin was struck and killed on Rt 1A in East Boston near Curtis Street.

In 2021, MassDOT commissioned a new Route 1A Corridor Study whose goals were to “improve safety for people using all modes of transportation (walking, biking, transit, driving, etc.)” and to “expand and enhance connectivity for users of all modes of transportation along and across the Route 1A corridor.”

That study identified the Curtis Street intersection as a “conflict point with high crash history, including fatalities.” Drivers have killed three people in the vicinity of the Route 1A-Curtis Street intersection since 2016.

MassDOT’s Route 1A Corridor Study remains incomplete, and there have been no public meetings for a full year.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, William F. McClellan Highway (Rt 1A) is under MassDOT jurisdiction. It is a two-way median divided road with two lanes / expanding to three travel lanes in each direction. There are sidewalks along either side of the street. The speed limit is 45mph.

Last month, we took a look at crashes listed in the MassDOT Crash Portal in June; three were identified as people walking. In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in July 2023. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Crash Information.” Any Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 32 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in July in the MassDOT Crash portal, 3 were identified as people walking.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in July was 60.
  • At least 1 was a hit and run, where the driver left the scene after striking someone.

The Boston Herald reports that 93-year old Robert Whitcomb was struck and killed by a juvenile driving a vehicle near Robert’s residence on Bartlett Street. Robert may have been on a tricycle when he was struck. (This crash may be re-categorized in the future, but is currently listed pedestrian crash in the database.)

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Bartlett Street is under local jurisdiction. It is two-way street with no sidewalks. The speed limit is unclear, as it is not listed and not viewable nearby on street view. The default speed limit in Merrimac is 30mph. Communities in Massachusetts can opt-in to a 25mph default speed limit and create 20mph Safety Zones.

Bartlett Street does not have a Google Street View image available, but the nearby intersection of Broad/Mill/Bartlett shows a “slow” sign at the start of Bartlett Street.

The Boston Globe reports 4-year old Ivan Pierre was struck and killed on Wood Avenue in Boston’s Hyde Park neighborhood near his family’s home. The driver, Olguens Joseph, left the scene after striking Ivan; he turned himself in almost two weeks later. From the article:

Boston police released a video of the car that allegedly struck and killed Ivan Pierre. The nine-second video shows the vehicle running a stop sign at the corner of Wood Avenue and Safford Street in the moments before Pierre was killed near his family’s home. The intersection is less than 500 feet from the house.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Wood Avenue is under local jurisdiction. It is a two way street, with 1 travel lane in each direction. There is a sidewalk on each side. The speed limit is 25mph.
There have been 2 other fatal crashes near that crash site on Wood Avenue in Hyde Park. On April 9, 2017 was a fatal motorcycle crash at the corner of Wood/Mariposa; and on August 11, 2020 there was a fatal vehicle crash. Since the crash in 2017, the Boston Transportation Department has implemented a number of street design changes to try and control speed and vehicle movement at wide intersections along the corridor (like Wood/Tacoma, Wood/Farrar, Wood/Mariposa), including flex posts and paint to force drivers to slow down when taking turns or navigating curves on the hilly roadway. There aren’t many crosswalks to get across Wood; this is likely due to poor sight lines with the street’s curves and hilly terrain.
Earlier this year, the City of Boston published a speed hump eligibility map as part of a safety surge effort.
Wood Avenue is not indicated as a street that qualifies for speed humps, but a number of the side streets are eligible for a future phase. It is possible that neighborhood arterials have not been listed on this general map when considering all roadways in the city in order to allow for a potential quicker rollout in order to strike a balance between implementing traffic calming and not impact any operations of MBTA bus routes or fire/emergency operations; it is also possible speed humps on arterials instead could be implemented on a case-by-case basis. Creating safer/slower streets could make it so fire/emergency responders would not need to respond to as many traffic crashes.

The Patriot Ledger reports that a pedestrian was hit by a car and suffered life-threatening injuries. The MassDOT crash portal dataset indicates that an 83-year old man died.

A damaged silver sedan was at the intersection, Patriot Ledger media partner WCVB reported. Vegetables from a bag were strewn on the road where the pedestrian was hit.

Quincy police said the driver stayed at the scene. It is unclear whether charges will be filed.

The victim’s name will not be released, police said.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Newcomb Street and McGrath Highway are both under local jurisdiction. Newcomb Street is a two way street with one lane in each direction. There is a sidewalk on each side. McGrath Highway is a divided two-way street, with two lanes in each direction. There is a sidewalk on each side. There is a crosswalk with RRFB flashers. The speed limit for each street is unclear, as they are both listed as 99 and there are no speed limit signs viewable nearby on Google Street View.

NBC Boston reports that 26-year Felix Romero was struck and seriously hurt at 4:59am in a hit and run crash on Thursday morning. He was standing outside his car after being involved in a minor crash with another vehicle on Route 3 when he was struck. Felix was rushed to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

State police said the driver of the white box truck left the scene of the crash and may have crossed into New Hampshire. 

NBC Boston spoke with his family:

His family is asking the driver to please come forward, saying, “We need you to come forward, we want justice for our son, we want justice for our kid.”

Boston 25 News reports that 65-year old Kevin Bradley, a professional who was onsite supporting recent construction at the Apple store, was struck and killed by 53-year old Bradley Rein, the driver who crashed his SUV through the Apple Store’s glass facade at Derby Street Shops at 10:45am Monday morning. 19 other people were injured. Officials said it was not clear how fast the vehicle was traveling. 

Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz announced charges of reckless homicide by a motor vehicle and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

More from Boston 25 News:

Dr. Jason Tracy, Chief of Emergency Medicine at South Shore Hospital, said 17 people in total arrived at the ER suffering from “all types of traumatic injuries,” including head trauma, lower extremity injuries, and “mangled” limbs.

Tracy added that some of the victims were immediately taken in for surgery and that others will eventually need to be operated on. A number of those patients sustained life-threatening injuries, according to Dr. Chris Burns, the hospital’s trauma chief.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Derby Street is under MassDOT jurisdiction. However, this crash did not happen on MassDOT’s section of the roadway, it happened in the Derby Street Shops parking lot and into the Apple Store building, which is private property. There are trees and bushes, a large patio, and sidewalk between the parking lot and the building. The speed limit for the parking lot is unclear.

The Enterprise News reports that 50-year old Carlos Brito was struck and killed in a hit and run crash by the driver of a Nissan Murano SUV vehicle around 10pm on Monday evening. The driver left the scene and is still at large.

WCVB reports a 57-year old Michael Shaw was struck and killed by the 35-year old driver of a vehicle around 10:45am on Monday morning at the T-intersection of Cocasset Street and Oak Street. 

A Boston.com article references Facebook comments about the intersection:

On Facebook, several locals commented to urge police to have the town put in a traffic light at the intersection of Cocasset and Oak Streets.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Cocasset Street is under local jurisdiction. It is a two way street, with one lane in each direction. There is a sidewalk on one side along both Cocasset and Oak Streets, with a crosswalk at the intersection connecting the sidewalks. A flashing yellow/red light at the T intersection can be seen on Google Street View, with a stop sign at the Oak Street approach to the intersection. The speed limit is unclear, with 40mph and 35mph both listed in the database.

Western Mass News reports that 68-year old William Matteson was struck and killed by the driver of a vehicle on Chicopee Street in Chicopee after 5pm on Monday evening. 42-year-old Benjamin Goraj of Chicopee was arrested on charges including motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and operating under the influence (third offense).

Reporters spoke to Phylisity Sherokow, who lives nearby:

“This street, everybody’s speeding all the time,” Sherokow said. ” I think the police are trying their best to enforce the speed laws, but it’s Chicopee Street. People are flying down it at all hours of the day and night, and I walk to the stores myself sometimes. My husband, my family, we walk to the stores, just to get some fresh air, get a little walk, and it’s really sad.”

MassLive reports 62-year old Gary Turcotte was struck and killed in a hit and run by the driver of a vehicle around 5pm on Wednesday evening. The driver left the scene. This crash is less than a mile from a fatal crash that happened two days earlier on Chicopee Street at a similar time of evening.

Chicopee Street resident Susan Santoro started a handwritten petition — signed by over 400 people — asking for better traffic safety, including the installation of speed tables. From Western Mass News:

Santoro knew both victims well and she lives on Chicopee Street herself. She said over the past few years she’s lived there, she’s had serious concerns about drivers. “They will not stop for you. Even though the pedestrians have the right of way, you don’t have a right-of-way on this street,” Santoro noted.

Statewide Fatal Crashes In MA, March 2022

Each month, we post about the fatal crashes in Massachusetts from the previous month, and share any trends that we see. For the full list of monthly posts, head here. Earlier this year, we released a year in review for 2021 to highlight common issues.

Last month, we took a look at the seven fatal crashes listed in the MassDOT Crash Portal in February. In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in March 2022. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Crash Information.” The Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 23 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in March in the MassDOT Crash portal, seven were identified as people walking.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in March was 63.
  • We could not find any news coverage from two of the crashes. If you have any information, please let us know.

Marissa Voller, age 35, was struck and killed by the driver of a pickup truck on Bedford Street in Abington. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s office indicated that visibility was low and the weather was misty.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, SR-18 (Bedford Street) is under MassDOT jurisdiction. Bedford Street is two-way, with 2 travel lanes in each direction. There is a sidewalk on both sides of the street. The speed limit is 45 mph in the Road Inventory. While the road inventory displays it as a 2 lane road with no sidewalks, Google Streetview from August 2021 shows a newly paved roadway with 2 lanes in each direction and sidewalks on both sides as part of the MassDOT Route 18 Weymouth-Abington Improvement project; it appears that images were captured before final striping.

Abington News reported that officials had concerns about drivers speeding on a newly widened and paved roadway prior to the March 1st crash:

The night before the accident, town officials commented on the increased speeds vehicles travel along the recently widened road.

“They are flying up 18,” Fire Chief John Nuttal told the Board of Selectmen the night before the accident, adding he was surprised one of the town’s emergency response vehicles hadn’t been hit yet.

“They’re definitely going faster,” Selectman Alex Bezanson said in agreement.

Donny Bowes, age 58, was struck and killed while in a crosswalk by the driver of a BMW SUV on Newport Avenue early on Friday morning, March 11th. NBC Boston reports that Donny was on his way to work when he was hit while crossing the street.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Newport Avenue is under local jurisdiction. The speed limit is 30mph. There are two travel lanes in each direction with an additional turn lane for each direction to turn onto Holbrook Rd, a sidewalk on each side of the street, and crosswalks for all legs of the intersection. There is a pedestrian overpass on one side of this intersection so that people can walk over the MBTA tracks.

Donny worked at Fenway Park for more than a decade, the Boston Globe reported:

“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Donny Bowes this morning,” the Red Sox said in a statement to the Globe on Friday. “He was beloved by countless co-workers and Red Sox fans during his 15 years with the security department. Donny’s endless energy and infectious positive attitude made a significant impact on the Fenway Park experience. He will be greatly missed.”

This crash is a little over a mile away from the Newport Ave + Willow Ave intersection where Robert Jansen, age 62, was struck and killed in May 2021 by a 21 year old driver of a Jeep. At the time, the Boston Globe reported that “an initial observation of the crash determined that there was approximately 278 feet of visible skid marks leading up to the motor vehicle and victim.”

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Waterford Street is under local jurisdiction. Waterford Street is two-way, with 1 travel lane in each direction. There is a sidewalk on both sides of the street. The sidewalk ends before the intersection with Baker Street. The speed limit is listed as 99 (not entered) in the Road Inventory, but there are school zone markings on the pavement for the nearby Waterford Street School. School zone speeds, which have been established in accordance with the Massachusetts Amendments to the MUTCD, are set at 20 mph for school zones in Massachusetts.

There is no Google Streetview available for this section of Waterford Street; this image is the nearby intersection of Baker Street & Waterford Street zoomed in showing angled parking on one side of the street and the school and playing fields.

Nancy “Maria” McDaniel was struck and killed at the intersection of Beech and West Franklin Streets while out walking her beloved dog, Henry, by a male driver traveling eastbound according to Western Mass News.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette talked to her sister, Ann Marie Carvalho:

Asked what more she wanted to say, Carvalho urged people to slow down when driving and give the right-of-way to pedestrians.

“Stop texting, stop playing with the radio. Whatever you’re doing, pay attention,” she said. “It impacts the whole family, burying somebody who has no right being buried yet.”

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, West Franklin Street and Beech Street are each under local jurisdiction. It is a signalized intersection with crosswalks on each leg. West Franklin Street is two-way, with 1 travel lane in each direction. There is an additional right turning lane at the intersection with Beech Street. There is a sidewalk on both sides of the street. The speed limit is listed as both 30mph and 25mph in the Road Inventory. Beech Street is two-way, with 2 travel lanes in each direction with a median at the intersection. There is a sidewalk on both sides of the street. The speed limit for Beech Street is listed as 25 mph southwest of Franklin Street, and 35mph northeast of Franklin Street in the Road Inventory.

David V. Karacius, age 72, was hit and killed on Boston Road in Sutton. The only news coverage of this crash we could find was from Boston 25 News, that Sutton Police were investigating after a person was struck by a vehicle and the included Facebook post from the Sutton Police Department. Waltham News Tribune/Wicked Local reported that a middle-aged man was struck by the driver of a work van on Prospect Hill Road near the intersection of Columbus Avenue. The 73-year old man was medflighted to a hospital, where he later died.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Prospect Hill Road is under local jurisdiction. Boston Road is two-way, with 1 travel lanes in each direction. There is an additional left turn lane at the intersection of Prospect Hill Avenue. There are sidewalks on both sides of the street. The speed limit is 30 mph in the Road Inventory. There is a crosswalk to cross Prospect Hill Avenue, but not Prospect Hill Road at this intersection.

Each month in 2021, we plan to post about the fatal crashes in Massachusetts from the previous month, and share any trends that we see. Last month, we took a look at the 6 fatal crashes listed in the MassDOT Crash Portal in April. In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in May 2021. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Information by Year.” The Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 31 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in May in the MassDOT Crash portal, 8 were identified as people walking.
  • The crash portal does not include names. The names of 4 of the people walking who died have not been made public yet.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in May was 50.75.
  • At least 1 of the crashes were hit & runs (as referenced in news articles).
  • The name of the person driving was not identified in any of the crashes in news articles that we found.

53 year old Kevin Perkins was struck and killed by a driver on Collins Street (Rt 286) in Salisbury. The Daily News of Newburyport reported that Kevin worked for a landscape company and was struck by his co-worker driving a dump truck while trying to park a trailer. According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this street is under local jurisdiction. The speed limit is 30 mph, and there are no sidewalks.

60 year old Aida Brito was struck and killed by a driver as she crossed Broadway (Route 28) in Methuen. Police spokesperson Lt. Randy Haggar told the Eagle Tribune that there was no crosswalk where Brito was walking and that speed did not appear to have been a factor.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this street is under local jurisdiction and the speed limit is 20mph. Streetview on Google Maps shows that it is approximately 1,376 feet (over a quarter of a mile) between the crosswalks at Oakland Ave/Broadway and Center St/Broadway.

An unidentified 33 year old man was hit and killed in Springfield on Boland Way. The driver fled the scene. Western Mass News reports that the person driving was found and that the person killed was a worker on a nearby construction site.

An unidentified 38 year old woman was hit and killed on Rt 1 North in Saugus near the intersection of Route 99; NBC 10 Boston reports that the 45 year old driver of an SUV remained at the scene, and that the two right lanes were closed for about two hours while the scene was cleared and the investigation began.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this road is a divided highway and under MassDOT jurisdiction. The speed limit is 50mph. There is a sidewalk along the side of the road.

Billy Clark, a 63 year old Watertown man, was hit and killed while in a crosswalk by the driver of a tractor trailer who was turning left off Main Street onto Bacon Street in Waltham. WCVB reported that Billy was well known and liked by residents.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, both Main and Bacon are under local jurisdiction. Main Street has a speed limit of 35mph and Bacon has a speed limit of 30mph.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports that 28 year old Kaylie Piekarczyk was riding her motorcycle in Sutton when she lost control, and was then hit by the driver of an oncoming SUV.

It is likely that FARS determined that this is categorized as a pedestrian crash since the person was no longer on their motorcycle when struck. [Update, 3/23/2022: this was re-categorized as a motorcycle crash.]

An unidentified 69 year old man was hit and killed at the corner of Bradford and Bangs Street in Provincetown according to CapeCod.com.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, both streets are under local jurisdiction, and have speed limits of 20-25mph. Bradford Street is 20 feet wide, with one lane in each direction; Bangs Street is 14 feet wide and operates as a two way yield street. While there are no sidewalks, there is a crosswalk at Bangs Street.
