Gloucester is a great place to walk. The city’s unique and dramatic scenic landscapes are world-renowned. These landscapes inspire artists and attract visitors who contribute to jobs and strengthen the local economy. Residents can use this map to rediscover the joy of exploring the city on foot, the best way to appreciate Gloucester’s subtle beauty and walk in the steps of our predecessors. This map is designed to show you how long it takes to walk between special locations in Gloucester in 3- to 12-minute walk segments around the city. Pick a starting place and follow the map to determine a route and the time that it will take to walk that route. The map on this side covers central Gloucester, while the maps on the other side show the long route that connects Lanesville, Annisquam, and Riverdale and a special inset map of Magnolia.
Walking is the simplest thing you can do to improve your health. It benefits your heart, lungs, muscles, and energy and helps to lower weight and stress levels. Walking also increases environmental health as well as our sense of community. When the number of people walking in a community increases, so does the number of social interactions. Cities where people are regularly seen out walking tend to be safe and friendly places to live and visit.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends daily walks. Start with 5-10 minutes a day and work up to 30 minutes (1.5 miles). Every hour of brisk walking can add two hours to your life, but even short walks help!

You can go anywhere on foot. Many destinations in Milford are no more than a 10-minute walk away – and many are even closer than that. You’ll be surprised how short the walks are – from homes, schools, downtown businesses and shopping centers to all parts of town.

Walking is an exercise that people stick with. It has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is the simplest positive change you can make to improve your health. It provides benefits for your heart, lungs, muscles and energy while helping you to maintain and lower your weight and reduce stress. East Boston has many opportunities to walk. Neighborhoods are close together, retail areas are easy to find, and there’s a great deal to see. Take a walk with your family along these three very different walking routes.
