The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Yesterday’s C The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Yesterday’s Community Walk

Yesterday’s community walk revealed a mix of highlights and concerns.

The Good: Many participants being in community!

The Bad: We noticed several areas where improvement is needed, including overgrown plants obstructing pathways and potholes in pedestrians and faded crosswalks.

The Ugly: It’s concerning to see roads running directly into sidewalks without curbs, posing risks to pedestrians. Addressing these issues will enhance safety and accessibility for everyone in our community.

🚨 Boston leads the state in fatal crashes — b 🚨 Boston leads the state in fatal crashes — but it doesn’t have to stay that way.

Ten years ago, the City made a bold promise: Vision Zero — a commitment to end fatal and severe traffic crashes by 2030.

Under Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Boston launched the Vision Zero Task Force to drive real change with real strategies. That mission continues today.

Because no one should lose their life just trying to get where they’re going.

🇺🇸 The history of curb cuts in the United St 🇺🇸 The history of curb cuts in the United States highlights a journey from initial implementation to widespread adoption, driven by disability rights activism.

- First Curb Cuts: The first curb cuts were indeed installed in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1945, as a result of advocacy by disabled veterans, including Jack Fisher.

- Role of Activism: The 1970s saw significant activism, particularly at the University of California, Berkeley, where students took matters into their own hands to create makeshift curb cuts. This activism paved the way for more systematic changes.

- Legislative Milestones: The Architectural Barriers Act of 1968 was a crucial step, requiring federally funded buildings to be accessible. However, it was the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 that mandated curb cuts and other accessibility features across the U.S., marking a major breakthrough in the fight for disability rights.

- Impact Beyond Disability: The “curb-cut effect” demonstrates how improvements for one group can benefit others. Curb cuts are now used by parents with strollers, delivery personnel, and cyclists, among others.

Thank you to everyone who attended our annual cele Thank you to everyone who attended our annual celebration last night. 💛

As a toddler mom, and the communications coordinator for WalkMass, I was deeply moved by Ethel’s raw and incredibly inspiring keynote speech. 🎤

She shared her powerful journey as a councilor in Worcester, her unwavering advocacy for safer streets, and the importance of community-centered change. One moment that especially struck a chord was when she spoke about Candice Asare-Yeboah, an almost-second grader who tragically lost her life in April 2022 after being hit in Worcester. 💔

Etel’s words were a call to action — a reminder of the urgent need to prioritize safety, equity, and compassion in our neighborhoods. ✊🏼

@etel_haxhiaj

Thank you everyone who continues to push for change. We can not undone the work we have done. - Emma Itri @ Walkmass
