With the design and construction of many new schools in Massachusetts, WalkBoston is busy once again working to ensure that the proposed site plans prioritize students walking to school. We just met with HMFH Architects and Crosby|Schlessinger|Smallridge to discuss the Arlington High School Building project this week at the request of some of our Arlington supporters.

Just a reminder that we published Walk to School? But how do I find the front door?: Strategies for designing a walkable school campus a couple of years ago. It’s as relevant as ever. Download your copy today.

WalkMassachusetts Network at StreetTalks 10-in-1

Stacey Beuttell recently promoted the WalkBoston’s newest statewide program, the WalkMassachusetts Network, at the Livable Streets Alliance StreetTalk 10-in-1 event. Launched at last year’s WalkBoston annual meeting, the Network aims to connect advocacy organizations, municipal committees, and community groups working on walking. Stacey summarizes the benefits of joining the Network and shares the results of our first Network forum held in December 2018  in this video.

Medford – Salem Street Walk Audit

Medford – Salem Street Walk Audit

WalkBoston led a walk audit of Salem Street in December 2018 attended by Mayor Stephanie Burke and representatives of multiple city departments, WalkMedford and local residents. Our recommendations are based on the day’s conversation and observations. It is important to note that Salem Street can be significantly improved with relatively low cost, incremental improvements until such time that it is scheduled for major reconstruction.

Chilly and fun Salem Street Walk Audit in Medford

Chilly and fun Salem Street Walk Audit in Medford

WalkBoston was thrilled to lead a Salem Street and Haines Square walk audit with WalkMedford. Joined by Mayor Stephanie Burke, multiple city officials, local business owners, school representatives / volunteers and the public our group of 15+ walked for two hours discussing possible improvements to safety, accessibility and street design quality.   So great that Lois B. joined us wearing her historic WalkBoston hat (circa 2002) from the Big Dig tunnel walk!
