Making walking safer + easier in MA for better health, a cleaner environment + vibrant communities.

The most frequent question I get during our fundra The most frequent question I get during our fundraiser is: Why give to WalkMassachusetts? 🚶‍♀️

The answer comes down to our statewide impact. Operating across multiple communities daily, we leverage limited state and federal funding to drive critical pedestrian safety improvements. Because every dollar goes toward keeping people safe—whether they’re walking, rolling, or biking—we’re committed to breaking through stagnant spaces and ending preventable roadway fatalities.

Thank you for supporting safer streets for everyone across Massachusetts! If haven’t already signup for beat the bay state! ((Link in bio))

“You can’t avoid hitting what you can’t see.”

With vehicle sizes on the rise—over 80% of new vehicles sold in the U.S. in recent years being SUVs and light trucks—blind spots in front of and behind vehicles are larger than ever. Front blind zones can reach up to 15 feet, and rear blind zones up to 50 feet.

In our latest post, Sue Auriemma, Vice President of Kids and Car Safety, shares her personal story and discusses the critical work being done to eliminate nontraffic incidents, improve vehicle safety ratings, and protect our most vulnerable pedestrians.

Pedestrian crashes in Massachusetts are on the ris Pedestrian crashes in Massachusetts are on the rise, and real solutions are needed now to keep our communities safe. 🚦🚶‍♀️

Here are 3 actionable ways we can make our streets safer for everyone:

1️⃣ Slow Drivers Down, Save Lives: You don’t need a massive budget to make an immediate impact. Quick, low-cost tactical urbanism—like using paint and cones—can slow traffic right away before scaling up to permanent infrastructure fixes.
2️⃣ Deter Reckless Driving: Contact your local legislators! Push for laws that permit traffic safety cameras to protect neighborhood streets while respecting privacy.
3️⃣ Empower Your Community: Lead a walk audit in your neighborhood to identify danger zones and advocate for targeted local changes.

Drop a comment or DM us if you need help getting started with a walk audit in your neighborhood! 📩👇

⚠️ October marks National Pedestrian Safety Month, ⚠️ October marks National Pedestrian Safety Month, a dedicated time to highlight the safety of vulnerable road users, raise awareness, and advocate for targeted infrastructure improvements across our communities. In line with this observance, we are sharing the stats for our 2025 fatal pedestrian crash report.

⚠️ In 2025 alone, 13 communities recorded multiple pedestrian crash deaths, led by Boston (8), Springfield (6), and Holyoke, Lowell, West Springfield, and Worcester (3 each).

⚠️ A deeper five-year trend analysis highlights recurring danger zones. Boston, Springfield, and Brockton have consistently recorded at least 2 pedestrian crash fatalities every single year over the five-year period spanning 2021 through 2025.

⚠️ These findings underscore that pedestrian fatalities are preventable, localized, and concentrated. Addressing these fatal crash corridors requires immediate implementation of proven Vision Zero strategies:

-Speed management and calming infrastructure
-Improved crosswalk visibility and signal timing (such as Leading Pedestrian Intervals)
-Targeted road redesigns in persistent high-crash municipalities

October is Pedestrian Safety Month. While national October is Pedestrian Safety Month. While national trends show progress in road safety, Massachusetts is moving backward. 🚨

We cannot accept rising pedestrian fatalities as an inevitable cost of transportation. It’s time for:
 * Statewide policy changes
 * Lower speed limits in residential areas
 * Dedicated funding for walkability and safe crossings

This must stop. 🛑

Join us in demanding actionable street design changes from local and state leaders.
