Reflecting on the words of our 2025 keynote, Etel Reflecting on the words of our 2025 keynote, Etel Haxhiaj, as we head into our Annual Celebration this Wednesday, April 15th. Etel spoke powerfully about the human cost of road design—reminding us that behind every crash report is a family, a neighbor, and a community changed forever.

At WalkMass, we believe that no one should be at risk simply for crossing the street after work or walking to school.

Join us in Kendall Square this Wednesday as we honor this year’s Golden Shoe winners and recommit to our mission of making Massachusetts a leader in pedestrian safety.

Part 2️⃣ of Somerville PTAC golden shoe award! ⭐️ Part 2️⃣ of Somerville PTAC golden shoe award! ⭐️

We are thrilled to announce that the Somerville Pedestrian & Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC) has been honored with a 2026 Golden Shoe Award by WalkMassachusetts!

This award recognizes a major milestone: PTAC’s first-ever community-led Walk Audit. While PTAC has long collaborated with the City on areas already slated for redesign, we took the initiative to lead this audit in Union Square to generate momentum for an area that isn’t yet scheduled for short-term improvements.

🌆 Why Union Square?
As one of the two busiest pedestrian areas in Somerville, Union Square is a beloved hub—but with five high-crash roads intersecting there, it poses a high risk to people walking. PTAC chose this location to ensure this environmental justice community gets the safety and accessibility it deserves.

🤝 A Powerful Collaboration
PTAC was proud to spearhead a coalition of community organizations to make this vision a reality:
Somerville Alliance for Safe Streets (SASS)

Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD)

Union Square Main Streets (USMS)

Groundwork Somerville, whose Green Team youth measured heat index, air quality, and noise levels.

💥 The Impact
With the help of 60 community members, PTAC audited three high-traffic routes, recording vital data on:
Sidewalk quality & crosswalk safety

Signal timing

Pedestrian amenities

This data is now directly informing the next stages of the Union Square Plaza and Streetscapes project.

Join us on April 15th as we celebrate this win at the WalkMassachusetts annual celebration!

What does it mean for a city to reject the status What does it mean for a city to reject the status quo?

For Somerville’s Director of Mobility, Brad Rawson, it meant moving past the “institutional defensive crouch” and admitting that our systems were unprepared for the tragedy of traffic violence. After the devastating losses of community members in 2019 and 2020, the mandate was clear: transformation was the only option.

The Evolution of Somerville Mobility:

From reactive to proactive: Somerville has now implemented 100+ critical safety interventions annually.

Transparency over silence: Built community-based programs rooted in empathy and data.

Advocacy in action: Supported statewide camera enforcement legislation to save lives.

Walkmass is honored to share that this commitment to safer streets has earned PTAC and the Dept. of Mobility a Golden Shoe Award nomination! 🏆

Specific thanks to the 60+ community members who participated in the Union Square Walk Audit and the leadership of Alessandra Seiter.

Working closely with Executive Brendan Kearney, Tracy’s ability to translate complex data into actionable monthly and our annual crash reports has been vital to our success. As a guiding voice on our Communications Committee, her insight has shaped how we share our story with the world.

Congratulations to Katarina Torres Radisic who wil Congratulations to Katarina Torres Radisic who will be awarded a Golden Shoe on April 15th at Walkmass annual celebration ! 👟

Advocacy is long-term work, and Kat’s dedication as a Community Organizer and RTAG Facilitator has been instrumental in centering disability rights within urban design.

A prime example of their impact is the Shared Spaces project. Convened by Kat at the Boston Center for Independent Living (BCIL @cilboston ), this coalition brings together partners like WalkMassachusetts, @bostoncyclistsunion @massbike, @t4mass @casandra.xavier to ensure that bike lanes, sidewalks, and transit hubs are designed with everyone in mind.

Kat reminds us daily: A city isn’t truly walkable until it is accessible to all.
