Sometimes we have to take the lighter approach for pedestrian safety month—and by that I mean downing two shots of espresso and making a reel after a heavier morning of talking about the harder side of this work. ☕️🚸✨ link in bio!

⚠️ October marks National Pedestrian Safety Month, ⚠️ October marks National Pedestrian Safety Month, a dedicated time to highlight the safety of vulnerable road users, raise awareness, and advocate for targeted infrastructure improvements across our communities. In line with this observance, we are sharing the stats for our 2025 fatal pedestrian crash report.

⚠️ In 2025 alone, 13 communities recorded multiple pedestrian crash deaths, led by Boston (8), Springfield (6), and Holyoke, Lowell, West Springfield, and Worcester (3 each).

⚠️ A deeper five-year trend analysis highlights recurring danger zones. Boston, Springfield, and Brockton have consistently recorded at least 2 pedestrian crash fatalities every single year over the five-year period spanning 2021 through 2025.

⚠️ These findings underscore that pedestrian fatalities are preventable, localized, and concentrated. Addressing these fatal crash corridors requires immediate implementation of proven Vision Zero strategies:

-Speed management and calming infrastructure
-Improved crosswalk visibility and signal timing (such as Leading Pedestrian Intervals)
-Targeted road redesigns in persistent high-crash municipalities

October is Pedestrian Safety Month. While national October is Pedestrian Safety Month. While national trends show progress in road safety, Massachusetts is moving backward. 🚨

We cannot accept rising pedestrian fatalities as an inevitable cost of transportation. It’s time for:
 * Statewide policy changes
 * Lower speed limits in residential areas
 * Dedicated funding for walkability and safe crossings

This must stop. 🛑

Join us in demanding actionable street design changes from local and state leaders.

43% of pedestrians killed in Massachusetts are 65 43% of pedestrians killed in Massachusetts are 65 or older. That’s unacceptable.

Short crosswalk timers, wide intersections, and fast-turning cars make simple trips dangerous for older neighbors. Fixes like longer signal times, traffic calming, and raised crosswalks aren’t complicated—they save lives.

We need streets built for everyone, including our parents and grandparents.

October is National #PedestrianSafetyMonth, but lo October is National #PedestrianSafetyMonth, but local data shows we have a long way to go.

Nearly 1 in 7 MA communities lost a pedestrian in the past year. Pedestrian safety isn't just a city issue—it affects neighborhoods and roadways across the entire Commonwealth.

Every one of these lost lives was preventable. This month, we’re highlighting the reality of walking in MA and demanding safer streets for everyone.

Street safety is on the minds of many in Boston th Street safety is on the minds of many in Boston this week following the collision at Commonwealth Ave and St. Mary Street. As community conversations grow around pedestrian and bike interactions, data from last year shows that over 20% of Massachusetts’ 350+ traffic fatalities involved pedestrians.

As Brendan Kearney noted, building truly safe streets means looking at all aspects of design and ensuring everyone—whether walking, biking, or driving—can navigate our city safely. What changes would you like to see at busy campus intersections? 🛑👟🚲

Approaching my fourth year as the Dev and Comm Man Approaching my fourth year as the Dev and Comm Manager for WalkMass, I constantly bring myself back to this moment from the Day of Remembrance last year: our two incredible program managers writing some of the most important words on the ground, a very cold breeze, and a reminder of why we do this work every day.

Today is the first day of Pedestrian Safety Month, a Week Without Driving, and a month away from beat the Bay state. I am so looking forward to sharing all this month with our followers. If you aren’t already, please follow along. We still have so much work to do in the Commonwealth for vulnerable road users. SAFE STREETS NOW. Signing off, em Itri 💚

Our latest blog post breaks down the Week Without Our latest blog post breaks down the Week Without Driving initiative—a movement built not to shame drivers, but to highlight infrastructure gaps through lived experience, reflection, and policy action. Thank you to Ruth Rosas from @nondriversalliance
for speaking yesterday about this. @weekwithoutdriving

Key Takeaways:

Dignity & Access: Everyone deserves safe, accessible transit options.

Lived Experience Matters: From activists building 27 bus benches in Spokane to local mayors realizing the critical need for bus shelters, firsthand experience turns abstract policy into real-world change.

Data + Storytelling: Hard statistics combined with personal narratives drive meaningful, equitable transit investment.

Read the full breakdown on our blog to see how communities across the country are turning experience into advocacy.
