Watertown Square: Impacts of Charles River Road Realignment Concepts on Pedestrians

The Town of Watertown, working with VHB, is testing different concepts regarding Charles River Road with the goals of improving overall traffic safety and wayfinding, and of enhancing the pedestrian experience in Watertown Square. WalkBoston, funded through the EOPSS Pedestrian Safety Initiative, was asked to provide the Town with additional information on the effects of VHB’s realignment concepts on people walking through the Square.

The Charles River Road options consider the implications of realigning Charles River Road to meet up with Riverside Road, and test different vehicular direction options on pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular traffic flows and safety. Options 1-4 realign Charles River Road with Riverside Road, and Options 5 and 6 maintain the existing alignment with minor adjustments to travel lanes and curb lines, and add multi-modal facilities.

Pedestrian Safety Discussion in Randolph

On September 25, 2018, WalkBoston and municipal staff from the Town of Randolph met to discuss pedestrian safety in Randolph as part of the EOPSS Pedestrian Safety Planning Initiative. The main concerns expressed in our discussion included safety at specific locations/corridors, pedestrian safety at bus stops, and the safety of school children (particularly high school students) walking, biking and riding transit to school.

Saugus Walk Assessment

On September 12, 2018, WalkBoston conducted a walk assessment in Saugus, with support from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS). The goal of the walk assessment was to recommend improvements to the local built environment that improve pedestrian safety. Participants included Saugus residents, WalkBoston staff, and representatives from the Town Manager’s office, Town Meeting, Fire Department, Police Department, Planning Department, and Public Works Department.

Downtown Peabody Walk Assessment

On September 10, 2018, WalkBoston conducted a walk assessment in downtown Peabody, with support from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS). The goal of the walk assessment was to recommend improvements to the local built environment that improve pedestrian safety. Participants included Peabody residents, WalkBoston staff, and representatives from the Peabody City Council, Department of Community Development, Department of Public Services, and Commission on Disability.
